From Vietnam to the Netherlands.
Thi originally came from Vietnam to the Netherlands to study. “I studied communication and advertising in Rotterdam. I have always loved creative works. And at first, I planned to return to Vietnam and would build my career there”
After graduating, major changes in her personal life led her to decide to stay in the Netherlands. Finding a job, however, was challenging. “I barely spoke Dutch and I didn’t really know the culture yet. Actually adapting to a completely new country was not easy.” Eventually, she got a chance to join Lavastica - the start of a long and meaningful career journey, for which she is always thankful.
“I was afraid to answer the phone”.
In the beginning, working in the Netherlands felt overwhelming at times. Especially the language barrier made Thi feel insecure. “When I first started, I was sometimes afraid to answer the phone. I was worried that I wouldn’t understand people properly.”
She still remembers the support and encouragement which she received from her colleagues during those early days. “Daan helped me a lot. He would make lists of difficult Dutch words for me to practice everyday.” Now, more than fifteen years later, after working in different teams, Thi is an integral member of the Benelux sales team.
A supportive role that suits her perfectly.
Joining the Benelux team, Thi focusses on back-office and the support side of sales, taking on a more Desk-based Account Manager role. “I enjoy handling emails, preparing quotations and processing orders, offering services to customer and helping things behind the scenes.” And her teammates will be able to regularly visit customers, providing technical support when needed.
An international workplace.
Thi’s story perfectly reflects how international Lavastica truly is, not only in terms of customers, but also the people who work there. “I’m Vietnamese, I live in the Netherlands, and I work in an international industry. That makes the job very interesting.”
Even after living in the Netherlands for many years, she still feels deeply connected to her roots. “Everyday I still listen to Vietnamese music, watch Vietnamese movies, and have Vietnamese food. I try to visit Vietnam every few years.”
Pushing through uncertainty.
The most inspiring part of Thi’s story is her perseverance. Despite language barriers, cultural differences, and moments of insecurity, she has built a solid career within an international company.
“I can still feel insecure about my Dutch sometimes. But when I look back at where I started… I’m actually quite proud.” And rightfully so.
