Bringing structure to the organization.
As Finance Director, Bjarne is responsible for the financial health of the organization. Among other things, he ensures that the financial strategy aligns with the company’s broader ambitions. But his role goes far beyond numbers alone. “I look at the organization as a whole. When a company grows, it brings change. How can we design processes in a smarter way so they support that growth? I’m constantly looking for ways things can be improved.”
“In the first few months, I mainly observed and listened. How do people work? Why do they do things the way they do? Only once you understand that, you can start assessing what can be improved and where structure is needed.” This approach defines his way of working: not change for the sake of change, but making deliberate choices that truly move the organization forward.
According to Bjarne, structure is not about more rules, but about more clarity. “When a company grows, the way people work together changes. At a certain point, the approach that worked for years simply no longer fits. That’s when you need to rethink responsibilities and expectations.” And that doesn’t mean that entrepreneurship disappears.
Entrepreneurship is in Lavastica’s DNA.
What immediately stood out to Bjarne about Lavastica is its entrepreneurial culture. “If you have a good idea, you’re given the space to run with it. I really like that. People are trusted.” He is determined to preserve that culture.
“To me, professionalizing does not mean creating more bureaucracy. It means clearly defining responsibilities so people can collaborate more effectively.” The new structure should actually empower people to make decisions themselves. “When people know what is expected of them and are given responsibility, it creates more space to take initiative.”
Building towards the future.
In addition to organizational development, Bjarne is also involved in innovation. He sees the potential of AI in particular as a major opportunity. “We are constantly looking at how we can make processes smarter. By automating repetitive tasks, we create more time for work where people truly add value.” Furthermore, opportunities are being explored to automate data analysis and develop smarter dashboards.
Affinity with the maritime sector.
Looking back at his career, the maritime sector has been a consistent thread throughout Bjarne’s journey. Early in his career, he gained experience auditing the accounts of offshore and shipping companies. He also worked in the maritime sector in his previous role. In addition, there is a personal connection that has further strengthened his affinity with the industry.
“My family is from Rotterdam, the city of the port. My grandfather worked as a painter at a major shipbuilding company, and my aunt, mother, and other grandfather all worked in logistics.”
At the same time, he emphasizes that this background is not a requirement to join Lavastica. For people who enjoy thinking along, taking responsibility, and making an impact, there are plenty of opportunities within the company. “You’re given a lot of responsibility here and the chance to really make an impact. There is plenty of room for initiative, and ideas are taken seriously. We are in a phase where we are building the next stage of the organization together.
