From personal trainer to purchasing.
Thorsten didn’t originally come from the maritime world at all.
“Before this, I worked at a gym as a personal trainer. At some point I started talking with Mark, who was already working at Lavastica. Then this opportunity came along. I started as a Sales Representative and basically just rolled into the industry.”
According to Thorsten, working at Lavastica is not only about diplomas or experience.
“Of course, you need to learn the systems and understand the business, but in the end, having good social skills is just as important.”
No two days are the same.
In his current role, Thorsten is responsible for supplier communication, stock management, negotiations, and processing incoming goods. That variety is exactly what keeps the job interesting for him.
And career growth? At Lavastica, that can also mean moving beyond your original position. “That’s one of the strong points of Lavastica. There are multiple directions you can grow into within the company. At some point, you also don’t want to keep doing exactly the same thing forever.”
“You can’t be easily intimidated”.
Thorsten describes the company culture as friendly, direct, and sometimes a little rough around the edges. “You definitely need to be able to handle a joke. It’s a pretty direct culture.”
One of the biggest advantages of working at Lavastica, according to Thorsten, is the freedom employees get. “I live an hour away from Rotterdam, so being able to work from home really makes a difference for me. Besides that, you also get opportunities to travel for work, visit exhibitions, or meet customers. That makes the job very dynamic.”
Honesty is the best policy.
When asked about his “superpower,” Thorsten doesn’t need much time to think. “Honesty. I just say what I think.” And his kryptonite? “Stroopwafels: a typical Dutch cookie.” Even his favorite life advice fits perfectly with his personality: “Honesty lasts the longest.” It perfectly describes why Thorsten fits so well within Lavastica: down-to-earth, direct, and never afraid to speak his mind.
Would his 10-year-old self ever have expected to end up in purchasing? “He’d probably ask: what are you even doing? I always thought I would stay in sports.” But he clearly has no regrets about making the switch. “It’s simply a great employer. There are a lot of opportunities, a lot of variety, and plenty of chances to grow.”
